The European American Chamber of Commerce was delighted to welcome João Vale de Almeida the European Union Ambassador to the United States and as a guest speaker for the EACC’s Economic Update. In an interview by Professor Giuseppe Ammendola of New York University, the Honorable Mr. Vale de Almeida shared his insights on the European Union and its relationship with the United States with the EACC membership and guests.

Ambassador João Vale de Almeida is the Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the United States. In this capacity, he represents European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy, under the authority of the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.From 2004 to 2009 Mr. Vale de Almeida was the Head of Cabinet (Chief of staff and main adviser) for European Commission President José Manuel Barroso. He accompanied President Barroso in all European Council (EU Summit) and acted as President Barroso’s permanent Personal Representative (“Sherpa”) for G8 and G20 Summits and as his Personal Representative for the negotiations on the Treaty of Lisbon.
Giuseppe Ammendola, Dott., Ph.D. is a professor at New York University, an author, featured commentator, international guest lecturer and business consultant to multinational corporations, providing analyses in several languages on the US, European, and global economy and capital markets. He has taught courses in international trade and investment, international finance, international management, international marketing, international political economy, and international relations. Dr. Ammendola has consulted for mid- and small-sized companies on strategic management, marketing, and business plan evaluation and writing. Among other publications, he is the editor and main author of The European Union: Multidisciplinary Views, the author of From Creditor to Debtor: The US pursuit of Foreign Capital, and of the country study “Italy” in Western European Politics and Government.
