More about Kurt Sanger

Kurt Sanger advises clients on issues relating to information privacy, data security, incident response, and the use of technology by the government and military. He has particular experience concerning national security matters. In addition to assisting on “reactive” matters, he helps clients to proactively assess and quantify risks posed by all facets of the information technology ecosystem, from the supply chain to securing data.

Mr. Sanger also counsels clients in the areas of foreign investment, government procurement, cyber insurance, cooperative relationships with federal departments and agencies, and information technology issues arising from mergers and acquisitions.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Sanger served in the U.S. Marine Corps for over 23 years as a cyber operations attorney, criminal defense counsel and prosecutor, and advisor to the Afghan National Army. From 2007-2011, he supported the investigation and disposition of several of the largest combat incidents arising out of Afghanistan and Iraq.

As a litigator, Mr. Sanger served as a defense counsel for over 175 clients and prosecuted over 70 cases as counsel for the U.S. Government in military courts-martial. He was recalled to active duty to serve as co-lead counsel for the government in one of the largest war crimes tribunals arising out of Operation Enduring Freedom.

From 2014 to 2017, Mr. Sanger was General Counsel for U.S. Marine Corps Forces Cyber Command. At U.S. Cyber Command from 2017 to 2022, he served first as the lead attorney for plans, policy, domestic and international partnerships, and legislative affairs, later as lead attorney for operations and intelligence, and finally as the Command’s Deputy General Counsel. He retired from the Marine Corps as a Lieutenant Colonel in November 2022.

Mr. Sanger is a frequent speaker and writer addressing issues related to cybersecurity, national security, and their impact on the private sector.
