Medical University of Vienna works on building a European search engine for precedence cases in the field of radiology

As part of the EU research project KHRESMOI, a team of experts from the University Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at the MedUni Vienna is building up a search engine that will enable radiologists to retrieve precedence cases within seconds and thus compare the results with their current finding.

It will give radiologists the ability to very quickly access a database of images and at the same time look at literature on specialist problems in radiology. The project brings together twelve partners from Europe whose specialist fields range from linguistics therapy and computer-based image processing to medicine.

“What we’re developing at the MedUni Vienna is a tool to assist with better diagnosis when, for example, an unknown anomaly is discovered on a CT scan and it would be useful to compare this finding with similar cases in order to arrive at a diagnosis faster,” explains Georg Langs from the University Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine who, in collaboration with Franz Kainberger and René Donner in the Computational Imaging Research Laboratory is heading up the project at the MedUni Vienna. The project was presented in March at the CEBIT.
