Local associations, companies, research centres, non-governmental organisations and local authorities are all showcasing what they are doing to promote sustainable energy from 24 to 28 June – EU sustainable energy week 2013.
Around 20 events will take place across the UK as part of sustainable energy week. Advisors in Pitscurry will be explaining how to reduce energy costs and use renewable energy for homes and offices on 26 June, while a lunch-time seminar on 28 June in Fyvie will offer advice on wood-fuelled heating, plus loans and grants available for installing wood-fuelled heating.
Ireland’s 6 events include the launch of Think Energy – a campaign to encourage Dublin City Council staff to become more energy-efficient and reduce energy consumption within the city’s civic offices.
In Brussels, awards will be presented for innovative sustainable energy initiatives. Shortlisted nominees include the Bristol Power Co-op in the UK – an electricity company owned and run by its members. Members benefit from free solar installation and electricity, while surplus electricity generates money to pay for further installations.
A series of conferences will also take place in Brussels, looking at topics such as energy storage, financing sustainable energy, smart metering and alternative fuels.
The EU has set itself ambitious energy targets for 2020 as part of its strategy for increasing growth and jobs Within 7 years from now, greenhouse gas emissions should be at least 20% lower than those of 1990, 20% of energy used should come from renewable sources, and energy efficiency should increase by 20%.
