Institute of International Education | Announcing Partnership to Support Diverse Student Participation in Study Abroad

IIE is pleased to announce that the IIE Center for Access and Equity is partnering with the Council for Opportunity in Education to enhance and support existing and new programming and activities aimed at increasing study abroad participation among low-income, first-generation students, and students with disabilities in college or university. The latest Open Doors report indicates that only 10.5% of students with disabilities in the U.S. studied abroad in the 2021/22 academic year. Through CASSIE data, we know that first-generation college students are underrepresented in study abroad with only 8% participation. We know the positive impact of education abroad. For example, 94% of first-generation college students who studied abroad earned their undergraduate degree.“Amplifying and partnering with organizations that have expertise in and relationships with the underrepresented populations we’re seeking to better serve is critical to IIE’s commitment to advocating for access and equity in the field of international education,” said Courtney Temple, Executive Vice President, and Chief Administrative Officer of IIE.
